Blog: a web site where students can regularly post information, their thoughts, their expertise… whatever they want? It doesn’t necessarily have to be about narcissism, but often blogs are topic based and written on by passionate users.
For students, there are some very clear benefits of blogging:
- Increase (Brand) Awareness – Yes, you are a brand. Who knows you, and what people say about you… that is your brand. Adding a blog and updating it regularly allows you to make that first impression and to expand the base of your “brand”.
- Demonstrate Expertise – You’ve been studying a particular topic, like user interface design, for 4-5 years of your undergraduate degree. Some may just shrug you off as an academic student, but I’d argue many students are today’s experts. A lot of innovation happens at universities and colleges. This is an opportunity to muse about your cool projects. Who knows, an employer might be looking for someone fresh like you!
- Research – blogs provide an invaluable research tool, as it opens up a dialogue or discourse. By participating by blogging, like minded and knowledgeable people in your topic of choice might just provide you with learning resources outside of academia.
- Visibility – a blog is a great way to showcase yourself, and google, yahoo and bing will pick up on your fresh content. That will only help people find you!
Getting a blog setup is pretty quick and easy. It won’t cost that much, and with a little time and effort you can very easily be rolling! Just consider what you want to do with your blog.
If you don’t want to get bogged down with the technical details, give me a shout at by posting in my comments. I’m looking to sell off some excess server resources and I can give you really attractive and cheap blog hosting / setup =D
